Best Moving Company in Austin: How to Check Reviews, Insurance, and Quotes in 15 Minutes

The best moving company in Austin is the one that passes a quick check: TxDMV registration, insurance, real reviews, and a written quote. 15-minute buyer checklist from Heavenly.

Every Austin mover says it is the best moving company in town. The useful question is which one passes a quick check before you pay a deposit. You can run that check in about 15 minutes with a phone, a browser, and the quotes you already have.

This guide is for Austin-area households comparing two or three movers for a local or long-distance move. We run Austin-area moves every week. Use it on us and on everyone else, so the company you pick is the one that holds up on paper.

Who this 15-minute check is for

Use it if you have a shortlist and the reviews all look good. Use it if one quote is much lower than the rest and you want to know why. Skip any mover that will not give you a registration number, an insurance certificate, or a written quote.

Minutes 1 to 3: check the registration number

Texas movers who handle household goods inside the state register with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Movers who cross state lines also need a USDOT number from the federal government. Ask for both and look them up:

  • The TxDMV number should match the company name on your quote.
  • The USDOT number matters if any part of your move leaves Texas.
  • The name on the truck, the quote, and the registration should all line up.

A mover that hesitates to share these numbers is telling you something. Here is ours: TxDMV No. 009017587C and US DOT No. 3429695. Both are listed on our site.

Minutes 4 to 6: check insurance and valuation

Insurance and valuation are not the same thing. Ask:

  • Can you send a certificate of insurance before I pay a deposit?
  • What valuation coverage is included, and what does it pay if an item is damaged?
  • What does upgraded coverage cost, and what does it cover?
  • Will you issue a COI for my apartment or HOA, and how much notice do you need?

Here is how we handle it: Silver valuation coverage is included on every move at no extra charge, and building or HOA COIs are issued at no charge with about 48 hours of lead time. For the apartment side, see Austin apartment moves, COIs, and elevators.

Minutes 7 to 10: read reviews the right way

Star ratings blur together. Read the reviews themselves and look for:

  • Crew members mentioned by name, which usually means a real move.
  • Comments about the final price compared to the quote.
  • On-time arrival, or the lack of it.
  • How the company answers the bad reviews.
  • Recent dates, not only reviews from years ago.

A company with a few honest complaints and clear replies is often safer than one with only five-star adjectives. You can read ours on the Heavenly Moving reviews page.

Minutes 11 to 15: compare the written quotes

Put the quotes side by side. Each one should spell out:

  • Crew size and truck size assumed for your inventory.
  • The hourly rate, the minimum, and how partial hours are billed.
  • When the clock starts and how drive time is handled.
  • Fees for stairs, supplies, weekends, or specialty items.
  • Deposit amount, cancellation window, and reschedule policy.

Red flag: a round number with no inventory questions. Local moves are usually hourly, and a quote that leaves out crew size or fees is not one you can compare. For long-distance moves, ask for a binding or not-to-exceed estimate based on a real inventory. For that path, see Austin long-distance movers on inventory and binding estimates.

Here is how we handle it: a locked hourly rate with a two-hour minimum, no weekend upcharge, and no fees for stairs, long carries, or supplies.

Red flags that should end the call

  • No registration number, or a number that belongs to a different company.
  • A large cash deposit before anyone has seen your inventory.
  • A quote that is far below every other quote with no explanation.
  • No physical address or a phone that never answers.
  • Pressure to book today.

Step-by-step hire checklist

  • Look up the TxDMV number, and the USDOT number for interstate moves.
  • Ask for a certificate of insurance and the valuation terms in writing.
  • Read the newest reviews and how the company answers complaints.
  • Email access photos to support@heavenlymove.com with your quote request.
  • Get at least two written estimates with crew size and inclusions named.
  • Line up the quotes and ask about any fee one mover lists and another does not.
  • Repeat the date, arrival window, and access notes back to the rep before you reserve.

How we quote Austin jobs

When you request a quote, we want inventory notes, floors, parking, and anything heavy or fragile before the date locks. The estimate should reflect those notes, not a template. If something changes, ask for an updated written scope. Our clock runs from the time we arrive at your door until the last box is in.

Call (512) 340-0551 if you want us to walk through any of these checks with you before you submit the form.

The best mover for your move

The best moving company in Austin for a downtown high-rise may not be the best one for a Hill Country home with a long driveway. Match the mover to your access, your timeline, and your inventory. For more help, see what a fair local quote includes and what an Austin hourly rate should include.

FAQs

How do I check if an Austin mover is licensed? Ask for the TxDMV number and look it up with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. For moves that leave Texas, also check the USDOT number.

Are online reviews enough? No. Use them with the registration check, the insurance certificate, and a written quote.

Is the cheapest quote ever the best? Sometimes, if it lists the same crew, minimum, and fees as the others. If it leaves those out, it is not a real comparison.

Should I tip? Many customers do when the crew finishes on plan. Tips are separate from the written rate.

Can I change inventory after booking? Yes, but get an updated written scope.
