Hiring packers and movers Austin families trust starts with knowing exactly what "full packing" means on paper, not a vague promise that the crew will "handle everything." Packing is the part of a move that changes the quote the most, and it is also the part most often left off the estimate until move day.

This guide is for Austin households who want help with boxes, kitchens, closets, and fragile pieces, and who want that help priced in writing before the date locks. We pack and move homes across the Austin area every week, from downtown condos to family homes in Round Rock and Kyle. Use it so the estimate already reflects how much you want packed and when. For service details, see our Austin packing services page.

Who this Austin packing checklist is for

Use it if you are short on time, moving a full kitchen, or worried about glassware, art, and electronics. Use it if you got phone quotes that never asked how many boxes you already packed. Skip movers who will not put the packing scope, materials, and timing on paper.

It also helps people relocating to Austin for work who need the old home packed before they fly out. The questions are the same: what gets packed, who supplies materials, and how the packing time shows up on the bill.

Full, partial, or fragile only

Most packing jobs fall into one of three levels. Ask any mover to name the level on the estimate:

  • Full pack: the crew packs every room, closet, and cabinet.
  • Partial pack: the crew packs the kitchen and breakables, and you pack books, clothes, and the easy rooms.
  • Fragile only: the crew packs glass, art, mirrors, and electronics, and you handle the rest.
  • Unpacking at the new home, if you want it, and whether empty boxes get hauled away.

Here is how we handle it: full, partial, and fragile-only packing are each quoted separately, so you only pay for the level you choose. Unpacking is billed by the hour at the same locked rate, and we haul the empty boxes away.

What full packing actually includes

"Full packing" should mean more than tape and boxes. Ask and write down:

  • Who supplies boxes, paper, bubble wrap, dish packs, and wardrobe boxes.
  • How TVs, monitors, mirrors, and glass shelves get protected.
  • Whether hanging clothes go into wardrobe boxes or get folded.
  • How boxes are labeled so you can find the coffee maker on day one.
  • Whether specialty items like marble, glass tabletops, or high-value art need crating.

Here is how we handle it: boxes, tape, paper, bubble wrap, dish packs, wardrobe boxes, and heavy-duty TV cartons up to 78 inches are estimated as a separate line item on your quote, and you pay only for the materials we actually use on move day. Glass and dishware are double wrapped by packers who focus on kitchens, and every box is labeled to its destination room with a fragile flag. Custom wood crating for glass tabletops, marble, and high-value art is quoted separately and adds lead time.

How packing changes your quote

Packing is labor, so it adds crew time. A written quote should make that visible instead of hiding it inside a round number. The PDF or email should spell out:

  • Crew size and truck size assumed for your inventory.
  • Packing level: full, partial, or fragile only, named by room.
  • Whether packing happens the day before or on move day.
  • Minimum hours, overtime rules, and payment timing.
  • Deposit amount, cancellation window, and reschedule policy.

Red flag: a quote that covers "loading and transport" when you told the rep you want the kitchen packed. That is how a short day turns into a long one. Here is how we handle it: local moves have a two-hour minimum and 15-minute increments after that, the hourly rate you book is the rate you pay, and there is no weekend upcharge. For the broader hourly structure, see what an Austin hourly rate should include.

Pack day first, move day second

For most homes with more than a couple of rooms, packing the day before is the cleanest setup. The crew packs on day one, your breakables sit overnight in sealed boxes, and the truck loads on day two without anyone packing on the clock. Ask any mover whether they can split the job this way and how each day is billed. Here is how we handle it: pack day one, move day two is our most common setup, and we can drop off boxes and materials ahead of time if you want a head start.

Step-by-step hire checklist

  • Decide which rooms you want packed and which you will pack yourself.
  • List fragile items, art, mirrors, TVs, and anything that may need a crate.
  • Email cabinet, closet, and fragile-item photos to support@heavenlymove.com with your quote request.
  • Ask whether packing happens the day before or on move day.
  • Get at least one written estimate with the packing level and materials named.
  • Confirm the insurance certificate before any deposit clears.
  • Repeat the date, arrival window, and packing scope back to the rep before you reserve.

How we quote Austin packing jobs

When you request a quote, we want room counts, closets, kitchen size, and anything heavy or fragile before the date locks. A quick virtual walkthrough helps us size the packing crew and the truck. The estimate should reflect those notes, not a generic template. If you decide to pack more or less yourself, ask for an updated written scope. The clock starts when we arrive at your first address and stops when we're done.

Call (512) 340-0551 if you want to talk through a big kitchen or a house full of fragile pieces before you submit the form.

Trust signals for Austin packers and movers

A local number that answers. Willingness to put the packing level and materials on the estimate before asking for a deposit. Reviews that mention packers by the care they took with glass and dishes. A crew that labels boxes by room instead of "kitchen 4 of 9."

Packing for an apartment, a long-distance move, or storage

An apartment move may also need a COI and an elevator reservation, so add those notes to the packing plan. For that path, see Austin apartment moves, COIs, and elevators. Leaving Austin? Inventory matters even more, so see Austin long-distance movers on inventory. For a local quote checklist, see what a fair local quote includes.

FAQs

Do I have to choose full packing? No. You can pick full, partial, or fragile only, and each is quoted separately.

Do packers bring boxes and materials? Ask your mover. We estimate ours as a separate line item on your quote, and you pay only for what we actually use on move day.

Can you pack the day before the move? Yes. Packing on day one and moving on day two is the most common setup.

Will you unpack at the new home? We can. Unpacking is hourly at the same locked rate, and we haul the empty boxes away.

Should I tip? Many customers do when the crew protects fragile pieces and finishes on plan. Tips are separate from the written rate.
